Ecuadorian police have foiled an attempt to transport 200 kilograms of cocaine to Morocco after intercepting a shipment concealed inside a banana container aboard a vessel bound for the port of Tangier, in a new case highlighting Morocco’s position as a key transit point along intercontinental drug-trafficking routes supplying Europe with narcotics.
According to Ecuadorian newspaper Primicias, in a report titled “Ecuador seizes 200 kilograms of cocaine hidden in a banana container bound for Morocco,” the cocaine shipment was intercepted on the road linking Guayaquil and Posorja Port, after police stopped the container while it was being transported by road to the port. A search uncovered 200 packages of cocaine hidden inside eight bags among the banana cargo.
The destination of the shipment underscores the seriousness of the route, as the container was bound for Tangier, Morocco. According to Gerson Flores, head of the Southern Police District in Guayaquil, security authorities knew that the container was scheduled to leave Posorja Port for Morocco. The anti-drug investigation unit therefore coordinated with European authorities to inspect the container and prevent the shipment from reaching its destination.
The operation resulted in the arrest of one person and the seizure of the vehicle transporting the container. Ecuadorian police estimated the value of the seized cocaine at approximately $6 million for criminal networks at its final destination.
The operation once again draws attention to Morocco as a destination for cocaine shipments. The seized cargo was not headed toward an unspecified or transit destination, but specifically toward Tangier in northern Morocco, along a maritime route that places Moroccan ports within the network used by drug traffickers to move narcotics toward Europe.
According to Ecuadorian police, the country has in recent years become an important hub for transnational criminal networks involved in cocaine trafficking, seeking primarily to channel narcotics toward Europe and North America. In this case, the seizure reveals a specific route ending in Morocco, highlighting the role played by Moroccan ports in the movement of such shipments before the narcotics reach Europe.
The foiled shipment of 200 kilograms of cocaine adds to a series of cases that have placed Morocco on international drug-trafficking routes, once again bringing to the fore the kingdom’s position as a logistical platform for drug shipments bound for Europe and underscoring its alleged role as a key link in intercontinental cocaine-trafficking routes.
